UE Local 1105 is a rank-and-file union, which means members make the decisions. The most direct way for members to do this is through our monthly General Membership Meetings (GMMs). If you’re interested in bringing a proposal to a GMM, follow these steps:

  1. Author(s) of the proposal agree on the final language and obtain the signatures of at least 15 members. Proposal language should include a “Scope and Intent” section where the body of the proposal is summarized in a few short bullet points.
  2. No later than ten (10) days before the next GMM, the author(s) submit their proposal and signatures to the General Secretary, John Hutchinson, at hutch644@umn.edu.
    1. The General Secretary, at their discretion, can suggest minor edits to the proposal language. Such suggestions are not intended to fundamentally alter the proposal, but rather to ensure that it communicates the message / action clearly. The proposal author(s) ultimately have the right to accept or reject the suggestions put to the proposal at this stage.
  3. No later than five (5) days before the GMM, the Executive Board sends out an email to graduate workers containing the agenda. The agenda will include (or link to) the full text of the proposal as it will be voted on.
  4. During the GMM, the proposal author(s) will have time to present the proposal to the present membership. Following Robert’s Rules of Order, those present will be able to propose amendments and ultimately vote to accept, reject, or table the proposal.
